The Longest Night of the Year Requires the Heaviest Scent Date: December 21, 2025

Author: The Founder, Oud Aruma Category: Scent Culture

Today, December 21st, marks the Winter Solstice. In the UK, we will see less than 8 hours of sunlight. It is officially the Longest Night of the Year.

For most people, the darkness is something to hide from. But for lovers of Oud, this is our season.

In the world of olfactory engineering, light and heat are the enemies of longevity. The sun burns off top notes; the heat evaporates the heart. But the darkness? The darkness preserves.

Why Oud is "Liquid Night"

Historically, Oud was burned in the evening. It is a dense, heavy molecule that doesn't like to be rushed.

When we engineer a fragrance at Oud Aruma, we look at the "Dry Down"—that final stage of the perfume's life cycle that lives on your skin for 12+ hours.

  • Citrus is a morning scent—high energy, low lifespan.

  • Oud is a night scent—low volatility, high persistence.

On a night like tonight, where the darkness stretches on for 16 hours, you don't need a "fresh" burst of energy. You need a slow-burn. You need a scent with a "long tail" latency that stays with you until the sun finally rises tomorrow morning.

The Solstice Selection

To match the mood of the Solstice, we recommend putting away the "Blue" aquatic bottles today. They are too thin for this atmosphere.

Instead, reach for the Resins and the Woods.

  • Labdanum: The smell of warm amber and leather.

  • Hindi Oud: The deep, earthy anchor that grounds you.

  • Saffron: The spice that adds heat to the cold air.

Tonight, don't just wear a perfume. Wear a shield against the cold.

Happy Solstice.
